The weather is turning colder and Lisa Von Domek is pushing their Dallas rain down to us so let's opt for taking a short trip (an hour) to Salado this week-end! There is shopping and of course great food plus you'll get a real understanding of what Texas is all about (in case you didn't already know) at my restaurant pick in Salado!
JOHNNY'S STEAKS AND BAR-BE-QUE http://johnnyssteaksandbbq.com/
Salado is a wonderful place to spend the day shopping, especially at this time of the year. There are stores for antiques, home decor, art galleries and more. After you've spent the day browsing and you're hungry - stop in at Johnny's on Thomas Arnold Dr. Johnny's is a family run business and they take a lot of pride in that. When you walk through their door, they want you to get a feel for what Texas is all about. You'll find Southern hospitality in a rustic setting with the aroma of hand-cut steaks being grilled over a live mesquite wood fire. You can kick back in their Cantina with a full service bar, and, after 6pm there's live music!
There's plenty on the BBQ menu ... Johnny's USDA choice certified Angus steaks are cooked over a mesquite fire to guarantee tenderness and quality. You can choose from a 12-16 or 20 oz ribeye, an 8oz. filet mignon or sirloin. Or, maybe you'd like to have a chicken breast, some pork chops or maybe just a plate of ribeye ends & pieces. There's the Tailgate Special that has a pound of BBQ served on butcher paper with a cup of beans, sliced bread, a bag of chips, a block of cheese and all the fixings you'll need to complete the meal. There's also the "BBQ Tater" - a baked potato with Johnny's Chopped Brisket, butter, sour cream and topped with cheddar cheese & chives. Johnny's "Que Bowl" is another hit with chopped brisket & sausage on a bed of fries topped with pinto beans, nacho cheese, onions, jalapenos, pickles and topped with Johnny's famous BBQ sauce. Another favorite are the "Eagle Wings"- tender bacon wrapped chicken breasts stuffed with jalapeno & pepperjack cheese served with a potato & salad. If you still have room, try something from the dessert menu - cobbler with ice cream, a slice of fruit pie or a yummy brownie.
Johnny wants you to know when you are in Salado, to stop by his restaurant and see what it's all about. In the meantime, check out this video from Johnny's Outback & Cantina...
