Just for the Points, Payment for a Job Well Done.points

I first started getting serious about AR about a year and a half ago and the more that I learn the more that I respect this mechanism known affectionately as Active Rain, pure genius.

Active Rain is a media superstar, producing a great media outlet with thousands of great writers and commenters creating buzz constantly to attract the dollars of happy advertisers.

And all of the writers are paid in Points, Media coverage and SEO boosts.

Again, pure genius!

At first I thought the points were silly, but then I began to learn how these silly little points help me and active rain.

These points help Active Rain by;

  • Creating a constant supply of fresh essays, articles, fact sheets and other great copy that will attract the public and thus the advertisers.
  • Encouraging us to support each other with comments and reblogs
  • Targeting our articles into predesigned areas, like with the contests and some of the features.
  • And in other ways designed to get us to be a big happy family of article writers and commenters.writer

The Points help the members too;

  • Give us free membership after reaching 500,000 points.
  • Gets our picture at the top of our city, county and state active rain pages.
  • Encourage us to write lots of fresh copy for our clients, future clients, and of course the robots at Google who put our stuff at the top of the search engine.
  • Points encourage us to do things that will make the phone ring.
  • Encourage us to build relationships through comments, reblogs, and many other activities like those we see in the many contests every month.

Although the points seem silly at first, very few are wasted on anything that will not help both AR and the individual who is earning them.

When you see someone doing something that you think is “just for the points”, look closer, whether they are trying to or not, they are doing a greater good.

  • Perhaps they are writing a blog in the best way they know how, be patient their writing will get better with time.
  • Perhaps they are reblogging without what you feel is an adequate introduction, look at the bright side they are giving a deserving post a little more exposure for those who missed it.
  • Perhaps they are writing comments that you feel are inadequate, maybe they are doing the best that they can to voice a little support for the writer when they just don’t know what to say, at least they wrote or pasted something.
  • Perhaps they are wasting too much time on contests that you feel are silly, take a closer look at the contest, they are all designed to do something to improve our blogging or our SEO, contests are not just for play and points they all have a Real purpose.
  •

Now go have a great week, earn some points, eventually they may also be good for free t-shirts, caps, and stuff like that from Seattle.

Excellent point, Bob.  I had been reading a lot of article recently about agents that thought the point system silly and antiquated but I agree with you.  For me, the point system is a motivating factor to do the things I should be doing to grow my business.

Thanks Bob for your post.  I just became Active in the Rain last month when I took notice of an e-mail outlining some of the September challenges and thought I would tackle them.  I have tried to log on daily since then and read, comment on and write posts.  It has been interesting to see some of the same names pop up from time to time and I feel I have actually gotten to know some of them personally through their writing.  I hope a year and a half from now I will feel just like you do and recognize the benefit the point system has and that the time was well spent.

At first, I thought the points were a bit silly, but now that I am trying to make myself into a "real" blogger, they are like little rewards for getting the small jobs done along the way to the large goal!

The best part of the points system is the rewarding nature which inspires you to blog more to obtain more points.  It feels like you always have something to work for climbing the ranks.

The points are funny sometimes.  They are more of a "win the basketball game" type motivator than anything else.  It feeds into my hugely competitive nature.

Bob, Love the results from blogging! I do have to admit that points are a motivating factor for me as well, not to mention the connections made.

Hi Bob, congratulations on your featured -- 200 extra points!  What a geat post especially that you explained what points really mean.  I thought in the beginning too that points were silly and now, I understand their purpose.  I did not know that you received free membership after 500,000 points.  That is something to shot for!

Your point about points is well-stated.  The 500,000 is a real insentive for those who want to take full advantage of AR.

You really put this well.  Most folks don't realize that points do play a role - to reflect all we've done here to build a business.

Bob it is certainly nice to see a post about points that is positive. the majority of people knock them but they are a mptovation to get one moving to write that daily blog, leave a minimum 10 comments every day and push themselves to move up the ladder. I just hit number 4 in NH yesterday and now its off to catch #3.

Bob, I agree.  The point system is very motivating.  AR is great for many things, especially allowing us to learn from other Realtor's situations.
