So you broke a foot - no big deal? HA!  A must read post...

A week has gone by and I've not been on ActiveRain.   I'm not sure, but that very well may be a first for me since 2008. How ever does one survive without a little rain every day?  Honestly I just wasn't up to reading or commenting this past week.  I needed sometime to just deal with the fall out of the whole broken foot craziness.  Who knew that after 11 weeks in a boot that one would then have to deal with another bigger issue.  Seriously?  You've got to be kidding me was my response at least a couple of times or more. I thought I was 'free' to roam about the country after 11 boot weeks (with caution of course).

So here's what I've learned 'after the fact' of a broken foot.  If you ever have a broken foot (and I hope you never do) there are a couple of things that you should know up front in order to avoid what I'm going through now.

  1.  The first week of having to wear a big boot to protect your broken foot be very aware that it's going to cause you to be off balance. What does that mean? It means that your back and hips are going to go bonkers and the longer the boot is necessary the more bonkers it can be -  I call it - peg leg walking. Are you getting the picture?
  2. Start chiropractic adjustments right away and continue them once or twice a week while the boot is necessary. That will help you stay in alignment and not have issues to deal with after the boot comes off.
  3. Treat yourself to massages once a week while the boot is on (and afterwards as well).  Massages can help keep the energy flowing and hopefully keep you from severe pain afterwards.
  4. The longer the boot stays on the more likely it's going to be that you're going to have to deal with a bigger issue after the fact. You could develop severe pain (acute sciatica) on the opposite leg from the hip to the foot, because it's worked so hard to keep your broken foot 'safe' for weeks and months.
  5. If you do develop acute sciatica after getting out of the big boot get help right away. By help that means you'll probably have to be on a series of specific drugs to help calm the inflammation and reduce the acute pain. I tried to deal with it as I normally do with health issues, naturally. That didn't work (at all) and I finally got the help (drugs) needed to deal with the severe pain.
  6. Know it's going to take time to heal the sciatica issue. Ask for professional advice what you should do to help it get better. At first it's being still, then it's walking just a bit around the house and at some point you can start gentle stretches. For me I'm hoping I can start to walk around the block today....that will be a real good thing!

I'm writing this post to share information about what could happen if you break your foot and to give some tips about how to deal with it upfront  (This is NOT a pitty party - so please don't go there). I simply don't want anybody else have to go through what I've gone through this past 2 weeks after the boot came off.  I wish I had had more information upfront on what possibly could happen after   having to wear a boot for close to 3 months. And I sure wish I had known how I could have avoided a worse situation than a broken foot! Who wouldn't!!

So there you go.....my story is out there for anybody else that is unfortunate enough to break a foot. Now you (or a loved one) will have more information to handle it upfront and be up and walking sooner rather than later, all while avoiding a worse situtaion than a broken foot. That is a good thing!

Debbie Reynolds you've had it much worse.  And I agree - get the meds as quick as you can. I wish I had known that.

Sheila Anderson yes I saw that you were gone on the rare chance I was online. Hope you had a great time!  Surgery - let's just say I'm not going to have surgery. The foot isn't all the way healed but it's getting there. I can wait. I'm not going done this road again - ever.

Tom White and here I thought I had it so under control! Ha!  My attitude was pretty good most of the time with the boot on and... I was excited to get rid of it. Who knew the rest was in the wings. We do now.....

Anna, keep up with those treatments. They are helping my son a lot after hurting his back at work. It took a while but he is now free of the sciatic pain. It's amazing how protecting one part of our body leads to over compensation and pain in another part.

Miss Banana, that just sucks.  So sorry you are having all these issues as a result of a broken foot.....like that isn't bad enough.    A little something to ease the pain!

Roger D. Mucci has the right idea!  As someone who did not have a broken foot, but another issue a few years ago, I can tell you that sitting and walking at an awkward angle can lead to bigger things...I ended up with plantar fasciitis, then a hip and back issue, which was resolved by a very talented chiropractor and massage therapist.  When one thing gets off balance, it throws a lot of other things off, too.  Remember what they say...

The toe bone's connected to the foot bone,
The foot bone's connected to the ankle bone,
The ankle bone's connected to the leg bone,
Now shake dem skeleton bones!

Hope you are on the road to mending all that ails you.

Getting over any foot injury is often difficult, but a broken foot adds considerable discomfort to the process.  I suffered a stress factor of my foot a couple years ago.  And, it was then I realized how we take mere comfort in walking for granted.

I had no idea that all that would be involved.  I broke a toe about a month ago and have yet to real shoes other than Tom's and a basic boot.  I'm sending prayers and good vibes for a quick recovery from all things broken foot related! Hope you found a great chiropractor and masseause!

Anna-I sure hope I never break a foot and have to wear a boot. I already have chronic sciatica that I have lived with for 16 yrs and it sucks. It is VERY painful.  I have reg chiro visits and massages and they have made a huge difference in my life. I am sorry you have had to deal with all this in addition to the broken foot.  Hope you will be pain free soon.

I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense.  Thank you for sharing your journey.  I am sure that it will help someone down the road!  In fact, my dad is in one now for a broken foot.  The problem is that he broke his neck too, so massages and other therapies are out as well.  I have a feeling it will be a tough road ahead.  Thank you for the glimpse.  And get better soon!  You ARE missed!

Roger has a great idea about dealing with it naturally but a few chiropractic adjustments ans a few massages sounds even better. Enjoy your day!

Oh Anna, so sorry for the bummer foot.  A broken foot is no fun at all.  The one and only bone I have ever broken was my foot and it was no fun.   Hope you mend up quickly my friend. Hugs to you.

i have to say i was worried. I was hoping you were on vacation at best but happy to see the post this morning. I went through a broken ankle that i knew better and walked much sooner than i should only to re-injure it. Not sure if it will ever be back to normal. Welcome back.

Anna, I just saw this post, and wow!  There is nothing like a physical condition that makes it hard to get around.  Learned that coming back from double knee replacement last year.

We should never, ever take mobility for granted.  And yes, this teaches us how interconnected all of our various parts really are.  Hope you are up and running very soon!
