Distracted Driving Ordinance Austin, TX ~Effective Jan. 1, 2015
Starting January 1, 2015 Austin drivers need to keep your hands on the steering wheel and stay off your cell phones! While your vehicle is in motion you’d better adhere to no texting, touching your cell phones, laptops, GPS or other electronic devices! This applies to cyclists too!
Drivers and cyclists can touch devices if they are lawfully stopped at a red light, during standstill traffic or if they are trying to contact emergency services. No devices of any kind can be used in a school zone.
Smartphones and other devices can be used if they are mounted to the car dashboard. Bluetooth or similar devices or earphones as long as only one earbud is being used can be utilized by motorists.
Violators will face potential fines of up to $500.
The new law is intended to limit driver’s distractions and the goal is to make Austin roads safer! It’s our responsibility to adhere to the new ordinance….it just might save your life, your family and others.
