My Love/Hate Relationship with Gift Cards.

The other day I was in the mall picking up some last minute Christmas gifts.  This has always been a favorite time of year for me and unlike mostGift Card everyone I know, I love being in the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping.

What I love is watching everyone picking out gifts for their family, friends, boyfriends, or girlfriends.  It’s fun to see dad with kids in tow looking for that perfect gift for mom.  Yesterday there was a group of teen aged girls, all giggly and having fun picking out what they hoped would be the perfect gift.  As I stood in line at Godiva, there were some young college-aged men picking out gift boxes for girlfriends (I overheard them.)

Everyone was filled with laughter and joy!  That’s beautiful music in my book.

However now, most of my gift giving for relatives involves buying a gift card.  It seems the young ones prefer them.  Oh yes, they make it a lot easier for the giver.  The only decision you have to make is which card and how much.

And let’s face it, you don’t have to worry about trying to wrap it and ship it either!  You can even send e-cards that will arrive in someone’s email.

While I miss “the good old days” when you had to go out and buy a real gift and wrap it, I have to admit that gift cards are now on everybody’s wish list and very practical.

And, I also must admit that with Gift Cards you’re not left with presents that you don’t need/want/or like.

So you see, I have a love/hate relationship with these cards. They’re practical, easy, useful, quick and take up very little room under the tree.

And yet….. there’s still something fun about trying to find the perfect gift for someone, wrapping it and seeing them smile when they open it.

Kathy I am in the same place. I used to love picking out the right gifts for each one but they really do seem to want just gift cards. So no more wrapping and standing in line (often). Merry Christmas!!

Kathy,

I think we all seem to agree on the subject of gift cards...I do love buying and receiving a carefully chosen gift .  It is the expression of understanding and mirroring someone's soul, and that is the ultimate...A

I'm with you all the way Kathy! Gift cards may be practical but are oh so impersonal even if you wrap them up. Oh well, sign of the times...

K~with our family spread out through America and not having the everyday chance to see what their likes and dislikes are, it does take the stress away when you can give them the opportunity to pick out what they want instead of guessing.

So, what did those young college guys lean towards buying??

Kathy, I'm often finding myself giving gift cards, and hoping the ones I give have a better fate than most of those given me.  Liz and I have a small box of gift cards that we've accumulated over the last 4-5 years.  Fortunately in Ohio they're not allowed to reduce value for non-use.

Guilty as charged on some as well Liz and Bill Spear   I gave my niece an electronic GC and she already has it earmarked for what she has wanted.

I know what you mean...they do seem like an easy out, a step above giving cash, ick, but it works out some time...I love to shop too!

Oddly enough, I loved receiving money when I was a kid.  However more often than not it was from my godmother or someone that was anot a close family member. Kristin Johnston, Waukesha Realtor 414-254-6647

Me too - and the youngsters in our family all want gift cards. It's not my choice, but we follow their wishes. I do carefully choose gifts for the rest of the folks though. Merry Christmas to you Kathy, and your family.

Hi Kathy - I don't mind getting gift cards but I rarely buy them - I guess I prefer the agony of shopping for something :)

Kathy - love/hate is a good way to describe feelings about credit cards! It's always a bit disappointing to get one as it's a little boring, but better than someting that is not usable.

Olga Simoncelli well, it's better, I guess, than getting something that you have no use for or don't want.

I learned yesterday about how hackers are able to get unpurchased gift card numbers, activate them and run them before it has ever been purchased.  It may actually be time for the good, old fashioned check.

It definitely depends on the person/situation.  I try to get real gifts, but it doesn't always work out.  Gift cards sometimes feel like a "didn't put thought into it" last minute gift, but sometimes they are the perfect thing.  I have a buddy who's birthday is the week after Christmas.  Not very likely he didn't get everything he wanted for Christmas, so a gift card to his favorite coffee place is the perfect thing.

Gift cards are also great as "thank you for helping out or speaking at my event" gifts.

With cards, they are always the right size, color, flavor and I've yet to meet someone with an alergy to them!  Plus in California (unlike Florida and some other states) the value never declines or expires!

I hear you loud & clear, Kathy Streib but even gift cards can be a bust if there is a time limit or the receiver isn't fond of the chosen store.  Merry Christmas

I try and get at least one of each for my girls. I'll find them a unique gift that they wouldn't expect but I know will love and then I'll get them a gift card to a clothing store or something that I know they go to.

Is giving cash so awful?  I remember as a kid loving to open up cards from my grandmother with the green stuff tucked inside.  Oh wait.  She sent presents, too!

Kathy, I always wait till the last minute to finish my Christmas shopping, like you, I like the hustle and bustle, kinda reminds me of NY. I agree with you on gift cards, I buy something small to give along with the card. Luckily, I have some really young ones in my family so I get to buy them actual gifts.

Gift cards have become the norm in our holiday gifting for many of the reasons you stated. Nothing like getting a wrapped package for the kiddos but as they get older gift cards are the way to go, especially for me.
