My Love/Hate Relationship with Gift Cards.
The other day I was in the mall picking up some last minute Christmas gifts. This has always been a favorite time of year for me and unlike most everyone I know, I love being in the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping.
What I love is watching everyone picking out gifts for their family, friends, boyfriends, or girlfriends. It’s fun to see dad with kids in tow looking for that perfect gift for mom. Yesterday there was a group of teen aged girls, all giggly and having fun picking out what they hoped would be the perfect gift. As I stood in line at Godiva, there were some young college-aged men picking out gift boxes for girlfriends (I overheard them.)
Everyone was filled with laughter and joy! That’s beautiful music in my book.
However now, most of my gift giving for relatives involves buying a gift card. It seems the young ones prefer them. Oh yes, they make it a lot easier for the giver. The only decision you have to make is which card and how much.
And let’s face it, you don’t have to worry about trying to wrap it and ship it either! You can even send e-cards that will arrive in someone’s email.
While I miss “the good old days” when you had to go out and buy a real gift and wrap it, I have to admit that gift cards are now on everybody’s wish list and very practical.
And, I also must admit that with Gift Cards you’re not left with presents that you don’t need/want/or like.
So you see, I have a love/hate relationship with these cards. They’re practical, easy, useful, quick and take up very little room under the tree.
And yet….. there’s still something fun about trying to find the perfect gift for someone, wrapping it and seeing them smile when they open it.
