Staging FAQ’s- How Can I Make My 50’s Tile in My Bathroom Work.

Preparing your home for sale doesn’t have to break your budget.   It’s true, pink tile bathroombathrooms do count when buyers are viewing a property and often the 50’s tile just screams “DATED” to the buyer.   However, if your budget and time are limited, there are a few things you can do to help a buyer see this area as a possibility rather than crossing your house off their short list.

If you can’t remove it, then work with it by calling attention to other details.

1.Choose accessories that complement rather than compete with the tile. For example, you can choose all white towels or a color that doesn’t compete with the color of the tile. If you have a shower curtain, don’t let it compete with the tile.

2.Paint the walls to enhance your tile. Painting a wall a soft grey gives pink tile an updated look.

3.Keep the colors you use in the room to a minimum.

If you’re adding artwork or accessories, keep the colors in them to a minimum.

White towels4.Speaking of artwork….

Choose something that looks as if it was picked specifically for that room.  Have at least a little of the tile color in it.

5.Update your fixtures.  This works whether or not you have the 50’s tile in your bathroom.  And, don’t forget your light fixtures.

Don’t let your 50’s tile derail the sale of your home.  Let your buyers see the possibilities.

Excellent ideas for both sellers and listing agents.  I don't think it is fair to ask sellers to remodel an entire bathroom, so these are GREAT tips and advice!

Retro is making a come back in some parts of the Atlanta market.  Just making sure it's clean and the grout is in good shape can make a world of difference as well as updating fixtures with something in keeping with the period of the tile.

To me, I love the rose colored honeycomb tiles.  And there's plenty of ways to make that style pop as you mention!  Great post.

Kathy - I can just picture that 50's tile.  You have made some suggestions to make it work with tearing everything out.

but pinks blues yellows and greens (pea soup of course) are such traditions of the 50s!  we need to carry on the classics!

Hi Kathy Streib ,  It just takes a little imagination to get some of the old to look almost up to date.

Good morning Kathy. We recently did over a home and left some of the tile and created some accents, it came out amazing. Am sure most would have just ripped everything out.

Great advice Kathy.  Though, I would like to avoid any 50's style tile these days.

I'm a huge fan of design tips, staging tips and especially those that are budget-oriented. Love the soft grey idea! I abhore pink, so that grey would help me feel a bit better.

Good job, missy!

eveything seems to come back around. Ive seen two fabulous pink bathrooms that were made more subtle by a modern wallpaper pattern in dove gray with hibiscus cornice and the other was a girls bath with a denim finish on wall with white stitching and then the curtain and accessories were pocket books and shoes on the fabric...so adorable and girly !

Hi Kathy -- there seems to be a need in many people's minds that ripping out the "old" for something "new" and "now"  is the way to go.  Even when the budget is unlimited(and really, when is that the case?) there are alternatives that make a lot of sense for a seller to consider.   Good post.

Good Friday morning Kathy Streib -

Thank you for the excellent information on  how to make the older look work well in today's home.  I just sold a retro home to a young couple.  It was exactly what they were looking for.  Pink and blue tiled baths and a yellow tiled kitchen.

I bought several rental homes about 10 years ago and all were built in the 50s. I looked at so many homes in the neighborhood back then. All the bathrooms had this same look in either Yellow, green, blue or pink. LOL.   Guess what, they still do.    ;_)
