baltimore: Al Capone Cooked on this Stove in Baltimore ....Really !!! - 01/04/10 10:12 AM
When you hear "Al Capone" if you're like most people you think "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" or maybe "mobster" or "Scarface." You probably don't think "Baltimore"…yet Capone did live here twice during his criminal career.
As a young man he married Mae Coughlin and had a son, Albert Francis Capone. In a short-lived attempt to get away from his gangster life in Chicago, Capone moved his family to Baltimore and became the bookkeeper at a construction firm. Before long, though, one of his crime mentors offered him a job managing brothels, and Capone moved back to Chicago.
Capone made hundreds of … (36 comments)

baltimore: Forget the Snow...Live in a Condo! - 12/22/09 06:48 AM
It began Friday night and continued all day Saturday. I was doing my best to keep up with the 20+" history-making''  snowfall Baltimore was about to receive. Shoveling the steps a couple of times on Saturday got me a bit ahead. But then awakening Sunday morning to the absolute beauty of almost two feet of this magnificent whiteness was breathtaking. So again, I went out do the steps so I could bring Lee the newspaper. Then I spent almost two hours with the snow blower doing our driveway – I was not going to quit until the whole darn thing was done!

baltimore: Irene's New York Adventure! - 12/17/09 02:34 AM
My friend Irene is going on a New York adventure. We've been friends for a long time, and many years ago I helped sell contemporary ranch home that I just loved; you could tell it was owned by an artist. http://www.homerome.com/HTML/Properties/berkeley.html.

After a bit of searching we found the perfect condo, the perfect size, and the perfect location. Again, after Irene finished with it, this home had the unique style and flair of a very special artist.
You see we met through our artwork - we once did a show together with her stone sculptures and my free form ceramics. On the … (21 comments)

baltimore: Predictions in Arrears aka... 'To Done' List - 12/07/09 01:31 PM
Sally Cheeseman issued a delicious challenge: Write a post on my most positive ten predictions for 2010. How can I just do ten? When I started writing my "to do" list for 2009 around this time last year, I ended up with 28 things and could have gone for more. Now I'm looking back and seeing that there are a few things that I did this past year that were not on my list. Is it possible to make your predictions in arrears, sort of like the way property taxes are paid?
It is so satisfying -  having a “to done” list!

baltimore: What recession? Who says that real estate is down? - 11/19/09 02:02 PM
What recession? Who says that real estate is down? Penthouse condos in Baltimore are hot!

Ritz-Carlton Residences, Inner Harbor, Baltimore, MD
Yesterday the penthouse condominium at the Ritz-Carlton Residences on the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD was sold. Well, actually it was three penthouses joined together making a 4 bedroom, 6.5 baths, six balconies, and 12,000 sq. ft.
And it sold for a mere $12.6 million. It has views of the Inner Harbor, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Camden Yards sports complex, home to the Baltimore Orioles. And who bought it? None other than Baltimore native and mega-novelist Tom Clancy.
Clancy … (21 comments)

baltimore: Blog...The Gift That Keeps On Giving - 10/29/09 07:41 AM
A blog is the gift that keeps on giving!
When I write a blog article, that's not the end of that story. Whenever possible, that blog becomes a marketing piece, a thank-you note, an "I was thinking of you" reminder to a prospective client, and another opportunity to remind clients and prospects of my service and expertise.
Here's one example: There was a buyer who came to Baltimore from the British Virgin Islands to find a place for her college student daughter. She found me through the Internet and was interested in one of the condos I had listed. She was … (71 comments)

baltimore: Books and Blue Sky in Baltimore, MD - 09/28/09 03:31 PM
I watched the hourly weather the night before, and the forecast was rain all the way through 1:00 p.m., then sunshine and only a 10% chance of precipitation. Would the book signing, we had scheduled from 2:00 to 3:00 last Friday, be soggy or bright?
The day turned out to be one of those absolutely glorious gems, cool but sunny, no longer summer, but not quite fall either. A perfect day, and well deserved after last year's "Liquid Sunshine."  The planned book signing of  Real Estate the Rome Way  was scheduled for an hour at 2:00.  That hour turned into four, did not leave … (17 comments)

baltimore: The Baltimore Book Festival - A Signing! - 09/21/09 03:16 AM

A year ago, I went to the very soggy Baltimore Book Festival and had a great time even though the liquid sunshine was intense. Back then, I was a soon-to-be published author. This year, I have a book Real Estate the Right Rome Way and a book signing slot!

This Friday through Sunday (September 25-27) at Mt. Vernon Place, the 14th annual Baltimore Book Festival will spread out from the 600 block of North Charles Street with books, authors, food, performances, and fun.
Again this year I'll be volunteering with my publisher, Peg Silloway of The Silloway Press, at … (12 comments)

baltimore: With a Little Help from His Friends – An Ironman Lesson - 09/06/09 12:54 PM
Several mornings a week I go to Lifebridge Health Center and  workout-at-the-gym   This is where my trainer, John Vargo, helps me focus on Physical Training. John's clearly a fitness fan, and here's more proof: he recently competed in an Ironman marathon in Louisville, KY, and shared some photos.

What struck me about this was that while John was doing the running and riding his bicycle, he had a team supporting him. Dana Gaither, his girl friend, was there to hold up signs, run beside him for a while, and help him celebrate at the end. Besides Dana, other friends cheered him on and served … (23 comments)

baltimore: What's Luck Got to Do With Selling Houses in Baltimore, MD? - 08/31/09 07:35 AM
What's Luck Got to Do With It?
Not long ago I talked with Ylan Q Mui, a staff writer at the Washington Post, who was writing an article on the things sellers do to help sell their houses. She wasn't interested in decluttering or staging. What she wanted to talk about was lucky charms, totems, and other magical devices.
Her article, "Lady Luck Lounges on A Red Couch," ran on August 9, but you can still find it online (http://tinyurl.com/nkmher). She interviewed some agents in the area and included this about me and my lucky number:
"Margaret Rome, a real … (29 comments)

baltimore: For Perfect Crab Cakes Head to Box Hill Pizzeria in Belair, Maryland - 08/11/09 01:53 AM
"The Perfect Crab Cake" is something many restaurants in Maryland claim, but there's one place we've found that can back that claim with delicious proof.

Not long ago we spent a delightful afternoon visiting friends in Belair and decided to top it off with a stop at a local favorite. When you pull in to a neighborhood strip shopping center at 5:00 p.m. on a Tuesday, and the place is packed, you just know it's going to be good.

The Box Hill Pizzeria is known for its pizza, of course, but it's the crab cakes that bring people back. … (27 comments)

baltimore: From Baltimore,Maryland......Over the Bridge to Kent Island, Maryland - 08/10/09 01:43 PM
When you live in Baltimore, you are never far from so many different settings. They call this state "America in Miniature" for good reason – we have the sea shore at Ocean City, we have the largest estuary in the United States with the Chesapeake Bay, we have flat farmland on the Eastern Shore, and the mountains of the Appalachians in the west. Not long ago we took advantage of the possibilities by driving over to Kent Island for lunch.

baltimore: A Bit of Paradise…Good Friends at The Bay Café in Baltimore, Maryland - 08/08/09 09:10 AM

Gary Sisson is a Floyd Wickman trainer and one of my mentors. We met early in my career after I took the Sweathogs program, and have stayed good friends throughout the years. Gary called to say he was on his way to New Jersey visiting family, and would be coming through Baltimore on his way back home to North Carolina. We made plans to have lunch on his way home.
Lee and I would meet them at a favorite restaurant, the Bay Café in Baltimore,Maryland.

baltimore: Ice Cream Down On the Farm and Oh So Close To Baltimore! - 07/31/09 02:40 PM

After a full day of work or play...Here's a delightful way to get Ice Cream Down On the Farm and Oh So Close To Baltimore!  You can be out into the country without traveling very far from Baltimore. Nearby Bel Air in Harford County, just north and east of Baltimore, is home to Broom's Bloom Farm.
You get out in the fresh country air and at the same time go back in time to when things were simple, hand made, and came with a good sense of humor. You knew it was good by the long line waiting to try … (26 comments)
