celebrate the day: Good Friday Wishes - 04/06/23 01:39 PM
Good Friday Wishes

Good Friday is a solemn day for Christians. While families will come together on Easter Sunday, with dinners, picnics, and, of course, Easter egg hunts, none of this means anything without the selfless act of one Man.

It seems to me that if one Man would do this for all of us, the very least we could do is show Him our gratitude for His sacrifice by in turn showing kindness, love, and forgiveness to the people in our lives.

The highest act of love is the giving of the best gift, and, if necessary, at the greatest cost, to … (18 comments)

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is March 29…Time to Honor and Celebrate Their Efforts

Many of us were around during the Vietnam War. We had classmates and relatives who served. Some here may have served as well. Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

When the young men and women returned home, they were not greeted with parades and the gratitude that they deserved. Many placed their negative feelings about the war on them.

Larry was an F-4 pilot; a good friend, Vic, was part of the Lost Platoon in May of 1967.  I had a cousin who saw a sight so horrible … (20 comments)

Friday Fun…Bring on the Green!

While to my knowledge there is not a drop of Irish blood in me, I love St Patrick’s Day.

In my young adult days, it meant green beer (which I only sipped) and corned beef and cabbage.

Our extended family and friends in Delray Beach were huge on St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Each year we attended the Delray Beach St Patrick’s Day parade.

The Delray Beach St Patrick’s Day Parade n 2016 was special because the Honored Grand Marshalls were World War II Veterans flown in for the event.

Celebrate the Day…Let’s Read America!

Encouraging children (and adults) to read is critical to the growth and strength of our country.  That is why Read Across America Day is so important to me.

Bear with me while I repeat this story…my first job out after getting my Master's in Psychology, was administering tests to adults, many of whom had been released from prison.

I learned that many were unable to read at the third-grade level.
Imagine navigating your way through life and not being able to read or at least understand what you’re reading?!

Wordless Wednesday…Just Smile!!!

This is one of my favorite days for two reasons. First…it’s Share a Smile Day.

Peace begins with a smile.
Mother Teresa

A smile is what I love to see when I look at someone and it’s what I love to share with others.

It’s hard for someone even in the deepest of frown times not to smile when you show them yours.

Use your smile to change the world but don’t let the world change your smile. Unknown

My second reason why this is one of my favorite days…
It’s the day I married the love of my life, my very best friend, and … (18 comments)

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!  Wherever you are, I hope you’ll spend it with a loved one…your spouse, significant other, friend, relative, children…whomever.

Our days of fighting the crowds at a Houston restaurant on Valentine’s Day are over. Instead, we’ll eat out early or I’ll prepare one of our favorite dinners.

If you have a special someone in your life, don’t wait to let them know how much they mean to you. And don’t stop there…use the day to let friends and others know you care about them.

Celebrate the Day…We Love Receiving Them

There are a few things in life that are always welcomed…a smile, a hug, and a true compliment.

Today is National Compliment Day.  Personally, I don’t think we hand them out as much as we should.

I’m not talking about the “nice hair cursory” compliment. It’s too much like the “cursory hug and go.”

But paying someone a compliment that lets the receiver know you took notice of their work or an accomplishment or even something about them…THIS shows them that you have given it some thought.

Just as a smile, hug, or act of kindness is a two-way street, … (22 comments)

Merry Christmas Wishes

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Blessed Kwanzaa, or Happy Holidays…My wish for you is a day full of joy and peace.

I will have my family over…29 and counting…and a special visitor. I’m not sure who has more fun with this visitor…the young children or the adults.

I think it’s a combination of the joy of seeing the excitement in the eyes of our children and a wish that we still had that childlike wonder in us.

Thank you for making this another wonderful year to be a part of this platform.

Merry Christmas to you all!!!!

A Christmas Poem…2022

In 2010, I got a bee in my bonnet and wrote a Holiday Poem-Twas the Night Before Selling. I’ve tried to revamp, recreate, repurpose, and renovate it almost every year since then. 2020’s poem included the “special” situation we were in.

So, here we go for Christmas 2022…

A Christmas Poem 2022

Twas the night before moving
When all through the house,
All the creatures were stirring
Even shy Mr. Mouse

Supply chain problems that caused
many delays,
Did not stop all the repairs and
painting for days.

The Inspector had given the
Home an  “All Clear”
The sellers were happy and
Shouted a big cheer!

Thanksgiving Blessings…

While working on the November 2022 Thanksgiving Gratitude Challenge, I wandered around photos from some of our previous Thanksgiving celebrations.

The photos took me on a journey down memory lane from my childhood…to my first Thanksgiving away from family when we moved to FL…to Leesburg, VA where we knew no one, and back to Houston.

Growing up I could count on football games on television and tossing the football around our front yard. Always there was lots of food and even more people. One Turkey day was spent at the Annual Texas-A&M game in College Station.

One Thanksgiving in Leesburg, it was just … (23 comments)

Honoring All Veterans…

The Freedoms we have (and there are many) come at a price, paid for by the men and women who have served and continue to serve in our Armed Forces.

In my opinion, anyone who serves in the military in whatever capacity is owed our debt of gratitude, for it is through their sacrifice and that of their family’s that you and I have the opportunity to live the lives that we do.

Happy Halloween- Some Tricks and A Few Treats

Halloween seems to be pretty quiet this year.  Over the years as times have changed and in the interest of safety, many communities have Trunk or Treat areas rather than having our wee ones out knocking on doors in the neighborhood.

In our last neighborhood in Delray Beach, we would have 150+ tricksters…bags open…waiting to see what sweet treat they would receive.

Their parents stood patiently nearby, some reminding them to say Trick or Treat and sometimes to say Thank you!

Some of the parents walked the route with their friends and chatted…an adult beverage in hand.

Wordless Wednesday…International Day of Peace

Today is the International Day of Peace as declared by the United Nations. I read somewhere that Peace isn’t just something we celebrate but something we continue to build.

Besides peace in the world (wouldn't that be wonderful)...we can work on peace within our families…our workplace…neighbors…people we don’t even know.

It is up to us to make our own PEACE… learn to say a kind word (sometimes even if you don’t mean it)... offer an olive branch to someone…sit down with someone to discuss and learn, not a lecture.

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved … (26 comments)

This Week…Remembering

Every year around September 11, I find myself remembering where I was that day. I remember the numbness that I felt for days…watching video footage 24 hours a day…and wondering what was going to happen next.

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Twenty-one years later, I still have a warm spot in my heart when I think about how we came together as a nation. Old Glory flew proudly everywhere and we also wore flag pins.

Grab a Book For National Read-A-Book Day

Anytime I can encourage people to read…especially a book…I’m all in. Today is National Read-A-Book Day!!!

Whether or not you read on an e-Reader, audiobook, or a real book…there’s nothing like being transported to a place you’ve never been. A book can take you on a journey through a time long ago or educate you about a topic you know little of.

The next time you’re searching for a

Labor Day…A Celebration of Workers

Many years ago, Larry’s daughter spent the summer with us while she was on college break. She had to find a summer job, though, and not spend all summer lounging by the pool.

After two days as an employee at a video rental store (remember those), she proclaimed that the work was too hard and she was tired.

Larry told her…this is why it’s called work.

It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things. Theodore Roosevelt

Motivational Monday…Happiness Happens Day
What a perfect day to begin the week! Happiness, in my opinion, doesn’t just happen. Being happy is a choice for us to make…it is a habit we practice…and it is a state that takes nurturing.

“Happiness, in psychology, is a state of emotional well-being that a person experiences either in a narrow sense, when good things happen in a specific moment, or more broadly, as a positive evaluation of one’s life and accomplishments overall—that is, subjective well-being.”

Most of us want to be happy. However, there are some who wait for something to make them happy while others set … (28 comments)

World Drowning Prevention Day is July 25…

In Harris County, Tx (where I live) we’ve had 9 child drownings for the year as of July 15. In a 24-hour period, two lives were lost in separate accidents at the same lake.

Even if your child can swim like a fish, it’s important that they follow the golden rule of swimming and that is you never swim alone.  This goes for adults as well.

What else can you do?

DO NOT take your eyes off of anyone in the pool for even a second.

Friday Fun…You’re Going to Want One Now!!!

When I read that today is National Ice Cream Sundae Day, my thoughts went to summers, chocolate sauce, and a cherry on top!

What’s the origin of the ice cream sundae?
No one knows for sure but there are 3 top contenders who can lay claim to this creation.

When I was a wee one we went to the corner drugstore…Spell’s Pharmacy…and I can remember the sundaes being served in a tall tulip-shaped glass. It was pretty standard fare…vanilla ice cream (2 scoops), hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, and a cherry on top.

Happy Birthday…Land That I Love

When I hear “God Bless America” being sung or played, I get goosebumps and at times, I get a tear in my eye.

It’s like when you realize just how much you love and care for someone… those kinds of goosebumps.

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.
