This is a question I get all the time when I tell people that I am a mobile notary & mortgage notary signing agent. I am still amazed how many mortgage brokers and even title companies do not know what I do. I always take the time to explain to them the basic concept about being the last person to go to your client (or you , if you are the borrower) and even sometimes these days, the only person the client sees in the whole process. I tell them that we explain the documents, notarize them, then return them to the title company for processing and disbursement. We are not the closing company, but we represent the title company, and as I said, even the mortgage broker him/herself! If you are a Notary Signing Agent, tell as many people as you can, what it is you do. It is important that people know this service is out there, and they WILL request you. I've already had it happen several times in the last two years. If you make a good impression, people WILL request your services!
One thing I also tell everyone, 'just being a notary' is such an important role in our society. We play one of the biggest roles in our financial market place. We can be the only defense for fraud. Even the best notary might not be able to prevent all forms of identity fraud and such, but if the notary does their job properly, it will prevent a lot of problems! And also btw, I, and probably most mobile notaries, do not make much money being a mobile notary just by itself, it is the other services we provide which are associated with the notary license. In my case, of course, it is being a mortgage notary signing agent.
