Watch for spaced-out squatters
when previewing vacant homes

I'm always conscious about safety whenever I'm out by myself previewing properties.

Today I visited such a home and for some reason I was inclined to open a closet that had sliding doors, something I don't usually do.

I'll look at walk-in closets, but I'm always pretty sure that a closet with sliding, mirrored doors is just a closet.

The property did appear to be vacant since there was no furniture anywhere, but imagine my shock when I opened those mirrored closet doors and found an obviously spaced-out squatter staring back at me:

That dodo would have been Maced! I carry it into every house I go to....if no one lives there then nobody should be there.

Good luck

Oh boy..thats like a scene out of one of those scary movies. After picking my heart up off the floor, I'm not sure how I would have reacted! By the tone of your post, I am assuming this squatter was harmless. A good reminder when going into vacant homes to be alert.

I have had a vacant listing vandalized and robbed.  They turn them into party houses in some areas.

Hate when I open a closet and see my reflection in there. Gets the blood flowing!

Some poor kid is probably missing their toy.  Some parent was happy to have it lost I am sure.   When a client asks if they can open closets, cabinets, I always say that they need to look to feel comfortable with the home.  Hmmm .. that might put a little edge on things.  Fun for smiles.

Jim, Gosh he's had a little bit too much of something with those red crossed eye!  Did you offer to take him outside into the day light so he could get some good color back?

The oddest thing I ever found in a vacant listing was an empty 40 ounce malt liquor bottle.  Someone had definitley been partying in the house.

Thanks for stopping by, everyone.

I’m trying to catch up on old posts to see if anyone had a question or if there are some comments that need a response. If so, I’ll respond in a comment below this one.

Also remember that I return comment for comment, so I'll be by your blogs to read and comment soon. I'm exactly 30 days behind right now, but I usually catch up during Thanksgiving and Christmas, so you'll definitely hear from me soon.

And if you need a cat book for Christmas for that special cat person in your life — even yourself if you're your own special cat person in your life! — I can highly recommend “The Cat Lover’s Book of Days,” by our own ActiveRain Member Peg Silloway. It's a book that you can use year after year, and never get tired of, because there are no years in it, only days. It's great!
