yourstorys realty: What have I done for you lately? - 11/29/10 11:41 PM
In answer to the many people who have asked me for some more material about what we spoke about in your offices.  Social Media marketing and storyteller marketing for the real estate industry is going to change the way people buy and sell homes.  This industry is already changed completely with the use of the internet.  More the 85% of ALL people begin their search for homes on line.  This goes on for several weeks before any agent is contacted.  At the point of needing an agent it is usually connected to getting into a house that they have located and, … (6 comments)

yourstorys realty: I am Thankful for… - 11/23/10 05:14 AM
I am thankful for so many things and first on that list is the continued good health and habits of my family and dear friends.  I am thankful for all that I have learned and experienced this year and so look forward to continuing to grow and show what I have learned.  I am grateful to be back with my family using my cameras and storytelling skills in my neighborhoods.  I can’t wait to share with you the history of places like Wellesley, Natick, Dedham, Needham and my home town Milton.  There is so much history in the architecture, industries, manufacturing, … (2 comments)

yourstorys realty: Loss Analysis - 11/15/10 11:55 PM
Today I start my first full week at my new agency.  I have joined the top team in the nation under the number one brand.  This is great for me and I can’t wait to get started.  The truth is I started this journey with my first agency, but they didn’t want to keep up. They didn’t want to understand that internet technologies are revolutionizing the search and acquisition of real estate.  They didn’t want to put effort into prospecting, learning or growing. What they wanted to is do things as they had hoping and praying for the same results and … (8 comments)

yourstorys realty: Happy Days are Here Again! - 11/14/10 01:53 AM
It is now time to re-assess your goals from last year and buff them up for next year.  As I look at my goals set at this time last year I see I have attained each and every one except the over-the-top financial goal I set for myself.  I am not afraid, it still could happen.  I have a property in Anguilla BWI I have been marketing that, if it drops will put me over the top.  There could be something yet unseen at this point that could happen, but this is not what I want to talk about. The topic … (5 comments)

yourstorys realty: Reshaping the Story-Why not buy or sell, he said. - 11/10/10 10:26 PM
I have a question for every single buyer and seller out there sitting on a fence.  WHY?  What in the world are you waiting for. What are you hoping for?  The signs are all around you.  Lowest interest and steady, great prices on houses are the two indicators you must be seeing.  Maybe you are reading too much national news, or watching too much network tv.  These people are paid to deliver audience, and audience, it has been proven, is more likely to look for bad news than good.  Think about this, why do some slow down as they pass a … (6 comments)

yourstorys realty: Pre-Visualization and Preparation - 11/09/10 11:43 PM
Athletes for years have used the technique of pre-visualization to achieve goals they have not yet undertaken.  As they prepare they imagine themselves accomplishing what they have not yet.  The see themselves winning before they take the field.  When you listen to people complain about the economy and the housing market they are pre-visualizing as well. They are giving themselves the gift of failure before they talk to anyone.  I just don’t understand when people think this is acceptable in their lives. Personally when I hear this kind of talk too often from a person I just write them off.  They … (6 comments)

yourstorys realty: The Same but Different - 11/08/10 11:55 PM

This Thursday I will sit for my sales license for Massachusetts.  I am already licensed in Texas and had been working in an office in Dallas for 7 months. Texas requires 210 hours of education while there is just a 24 hour requirement in Massachusetts going up to 40 hours later next year.  There is no reciprocity between states so I am required to take the full test again.  In one regard it should be easy, right?  Well you would be wrong.  In looking through the books, taking one course on MA real estate law and then beginning to take … (6 comments)

yourstorys realty: What is Stopping You! - 11/06/10 03:39 AM
This follows yesterdays post about the seven major positive emotions that I posted yesterday here.  These are straight out of Napoleon Hill’s groundbreaking book about wealth development and mind focus Think and Grow Rich.
The emotion of FEAR. If fear is ruling your world than you are thinking thoughts about what you don’t want rather than what you do want.  The subconscious mind which rules your emotional world and drives your actions can not think it negatives.  When you are being driving by something you don’t want –poverty, loss of job, not achieving your goals–it turns it into what you do … (9 comments)

yourstorys realty: Un-professional Asset Manager - 11/04/10 12:45 AM
Part of my business is in the REO world.   I have railed against the fact that, as a seller’s agent, we never have access to the actual seller/investor.  There is a buffer–the asset manager who is a gate keeper for the investor/seller. This is not a horrible situation but can be, and this situation is one of them.
I have been working on this property that is in tough but not horrible shape. I was able to talk the foreclosed owner into a “cash for keys” departure. The asset manager who assigned me this property (it must have been I came … (5 comments)

yourstorys realty: Restart, reload, reboot - 11/02/10 12:58 AM
The full measure of any successful person is the failures they have overcome.   It is true that successful people fail far more than unsuccessful people, and this is because they try more.  The problem is not in failure, it is in quitting, or not learning from your failures. I am not afraid to admit failures, but I am more likely to focus on results.  Our country faces new opportunities this week as we elect, or reelect our leaders across the country.  I don’t think this is the forum for political discussion beyond our own professional interests, and in my case, I … (12 comments)

yourstorys realty: Masterminds - 10/30/10 01:27 AM
I have been lucky enough to have interviewed some of the most successful people in business over the years.  I have always been fascinated with what makes people tick.  How they do what they do to get the results that they get is instructive to me.  I know that is why I named my company YourStorys and changed it to YourStorys Realty when I began to focus all my energy only on the real estate industry a while ago.  I have found the most successful agents and brokers to be open and honest people.  There is a tier below them who … (11 comments)

yourstorys realty: Not like everyone else - 10/28/10 12:41 AM
To me it seems like most real estate marketing falls all over itself trying to be the same, only better.  Similar look and feel to the ads and the ad copy, similar approach to the postcards and the mailings and very little innovation of any sort.  If we are to look at other financial services industries we will find the players falling over themselves to be differentiated from their competition.  Underlying all financial services advertising is the need to communicate trust and competency.  When you are doing the same thing, only different, from your competition where is the trust?  I say … (6 comments)

yourstorys realty: The Family Component - 10/26/10 12:26 AM
This weekend my wife, Kathy, and I visited my son who is in school in Saratoga Springs, NY. Skidmore is a small, academic, liberal arts school that plays it’s sports in the Liberty League. My son is a lacrosse player on their varsity team. During the weekend I was away from the computer, from the news about real estate and the economy. We didn’t turn on a tv to hear any political barking. (Where have all the real leaders gone? Why can’t any of our major political parties take off the boxing gloves and put on the work gloves and get … (6 comments)

yourstorys realty: Dream Vacation Defined - 10/21/10 01:16 AM
How do you define a dream vacation?  I spent some time yesterday looking into this and not surprisingly different people use different criteria.  Some want action, some want rest, some want family, some want none it is just like that.  But on closer scrutiny most people when their vacation is over will speak of the same emotions.  They feel rested and rejuvenated.  They feel connected to themselves, the people they shared their vacation with, the people they are going to share the memories and pictures with all this is common.
7 Palms Villa in Anguilla, BWI is a startling home which … (7 comments)

yourstorys realty: Sitting with a friend--Social Media Primer - 10/20/10 10:27 AM
My friend Gerry Hailer, the greatest appraiser in Eastern Massachusetts, and I had lunch together last Friday.  He has been dragging his feet for years on social media, blogging and promotion of his incredible skills in any way.  What is really interesting about this is that he spent a career as an advertising writer before deciding he wanted a more sane life with fewer brown liquids to drink.  (That is another story for another day).  I have been talking to him about how to communicate out here on the web for a long time.  He wrote me this note yesterday and … (7 comments)

yourstorys realty: The power of vision and will - 10/20/10 01:11 AM
So it’s a tough market, right?  You and your Realtor® friends get together and commiserate.  You feel good in this group knowing it is bad for everyone.  In this thinking of no one is doing anything, so it is ok for me to not be doing anything.  WRONG!  With this type of thinking, just take off your pin, turn in your jacket and get another job.  You are right, you can’t do anything and this will create a do nothing action plan and that will create another dark hole in the industry.
The fact is houses are being sold.  The new … (9 comments)

yourstorys realty: Anquilla, BWI Winter Holiday Vacation Rental - 10/18/10 01:26 AM
Anguilla is one of those special islands that is not overrun with people. You will not find the types of crowds that populate St Bart's and other such popular resorts in the area. This makes it popular with the celebrity and exclusive crowd. Beautiful white sands and blue water is coupled with a relaxed atmosphere and wonderful service. The island sports more than it's share of great restaurants because of the exclusive clientele and lack of paparazzi. Paris Hilton wrote to her fans about Anguilla after returning back to her life of glitz and high jinx that the island was the … (2 comments)

yourstorys realty: All those business cards Q&A - 10/14/10 01:12 AM
I have wondered throughout my career what to do with all the cards I collect in a week. Best practices tell us that we should load them into our database and begin to stay in touch with the people. The ability to grow your sphere of influence day in and day out is dependent on this process. Well, I decided this week to make a video that let’s people remember who I was and to also let them know what I do. I have worked in and on video for the web since 2001. Since most people will first click on … (12 comments)
