social networking: Check Out How Local Agents Are Showing Up On The First Page of Google Search Results! - 10/29/10 02:22 AM
I'll start by saying I'm no SEO expert, but I found this very interesting.  I've seen a lot of debates as to whether or not social media is worth the time and effort.  Well, this Google search result makes a strong case for why it is.
We all know that the first page of the Google search results is the holy grail when it comes to driving traffic to your site.  Check out this search I did for "wicker park homes for sale".  In Chicago this is a very competitive search term.  Large brokers/websites dominant the first page - people who … (4 comments)

social networking: Why I'm So Excited To Attend Agent ReBoot in Chicago This Wednesday - 10/04/10 02:07 AM
In case you haven't heard, this Summer Inman News has been traveling around the country doing day long seminars called Agent ReBoot.  They market it as "will equip agents with the latest in business development, technology and marketing skills to help them be more successful."  This week is their nineth event out of twelve, and it's in Chicago!
Why am I so excited about this event in particular?  First, it's in Chicago!  Secondly, a local agent whose marketing strategies and business practices I really admire is speaking, Andrea Geller, broker associate for Sudler Sotheby's.
Andrea will be on a panel with David Black … (4 comments)

social networking: Andrea Geller - Interview About Successful Online Marketing - 08/19/10 03:38 AM
Andrea Geller is an agent with Sudler Sotheby's in Chicago, IL who is constantly telling me how much business she is getting from her online marketing.  I think her success is twofold: 1) doing the right things onine and 2) appropiately working the leads she does receive. Social media is a big part of her success.
I wanted to learn more about what she is doing, so I tracked her down and whipped out my flip cam and conducted this quick interview.  Here you go, enjoy!  And thanks Andrea!

social networking: Yammer: A Different Type Of Social Networking Tool - 04/21/10 02:17 AM
Today I wanted to talk about the social networking tool, Yammer (insert eye roll here and groan "another one...").  But wait, this one is different, it is a PRIVATE network that I think could be very powerful for local real estate offices.
Yammer is basically like Twitter where people post information in real time, only who sees the posts are contained to select people.  For example, at Zillow we have a Yammer account set up where only Zillow employees can post and see what each other writes.  For me personally, it is great because I work remotely and it can be … (12 comments)

social networking: Want Friends and Followers? Quit Talking About Yourself! - 01/29/10 12:11 AM
I love reading Dan Zarrella's blog where he uses data from 60,000+ Twitter accounts to report on trends.
Today's revelation: "Accounts that have more followers do not tend to talk about themselves much."
While interesting because it has data to support this claim, I couldn't help but think - doesn't that apply in the real world too?  How many people are attracted to those who opine on and on about themselves?
Once again, another example about how 'in person' actions that give you desired outcomes are examples of how you should act in the social media world as well.

social networking: A Detailed Lay Out Of My Social Media Marketing Plan - 07/08/09 05:22 AM
I often say that social media can be overwhelming if you don't have a plan.  However, sometimes without specifics, this might not make sense.  So instead of blogging about the theory of planning, I am just going to lay out my personal plan.  This is just what works for me, I am sure others have very different strategies and I would be interested in hearing them.
My goals:   1) Reach and educate real estate professionals about Zillow and internet advertising in general.   2) Keep in touch with my sphere of influence 3) Keep abreast of current real estate topics and 4) … (30 comments)

I'll keep this short and let … (9 comments)

social networking: Marketing to Generation G: Those who value Generosity and hate Greed - 02/09/09 05:20 AM
If you want to read a great blog about how to be a better blogger, you should check out www.copyblogger.com.  I learned so much from this site and get it sent to my email daily.
I thought today's post was particularly interesting and especially relevant to real estate agents and marketing.  How to Succeed Marketing to Generation "G"
This group is defined as:
GENERATION G captures the growing importance of ‘generosity' as a leading societal and business mindset. As consumers are disgusted with greed and its current dire consequences for the economy-and while that same upheaval has them longing more than … (7 comments)

social networking: Marketing By Answering LOCAL Questions Thru Social Media on Zillow Advice - 02/06/09 02:57 AM
Zillow Advice launched a few months ago (a interactive place to ask and answer real estate questions) and already thousands of questions and answers have been posted.
But who has time to sort through them all and search for the ones that apply to you?  Good question- that's why you can sign up to receive email alerts when there is a question posted in your local area.
1.  Go to Zillow and sign in.  Click on the Advice Tab and search for your topic of interest.  It could be a subject like short sales or an area like Chicago, IL or … (13 comments)

social networking: Reaching International Buyers With Social Networking - 08/15/08 06:20 AM
This week we had a friend stay with us who is originally from Hungary, but is currently spending a year in China.  He is very well traveled, mostly because of his job and also because of personal interests- so he is a fascinating person to talk to as he has a worldly take on things.  He is also totally dependent the Internet, especially skype, for communication because of time differences and calling costs.
We were at dinner last night, as most dinner conversations do with me and my husband, we started talking about websites and particularly social networking.  While we were … (5 comments)

social networking: Blogging is a SOCIAL media- keyword SOCIAL - 08/11/08 08:07 AM
I came across an Active Rain network blog the other day of someone who is in a similar line of work as me, working for a major real estate website.  Funny, I thought, I haven't heard of this person before nor ever seen their blog.  I checked out the blog and found some interesting content and nicely written posts.  When I clicked to find out more about this person, turns out they have written 128 posts!  So why haven't I heard of this person before?
I think the answer lies in "social" aspect of blogging.
I have written 138 posts, so … (63 comments)

social networking: Everything That Can Be Rated Will Be - 04/02/08 12:07 PM
I was in a meeting this week discussing general Web 2.0 principles and how people are using the web.  The statement was made "Everything that can be rated will be".  Meaning that the collective consumer voice is going to creep into every industry where free markets exist.
That got me thinking about how I ultimately make decisions.  I know that I use the internet a lot, but I surprised myself by how much I rely on other people's opinions when making a purchasing decision.  Here are some examples of my purchasing behaviors in just the last three months:
Got a new … (6 comments)
