michaelsdig: (not so) Speechless Sunday - Your Pad or Mine... - 06/13/10 12:24 AM
(not so) Speechless Sunday - Your Pad or Mine...     IMHO, there is nothing more soothing to the tired soul than the sounds of rustling water. Add a few croaking frogs, fish, and some pure white water lilies into the mix and voila ~ Nirvana...     Unlike regular gardening, water gardening is a whole different ball game. Like any gardening, it does take work. Lots of it. The rewards? Priceless...

I will be writing a post soon about creating water features. Be ready to throw the book of conventional wisdom out the door...      Complete Home Inspections/Complete Video Promotions  © … (34 comments)

michaelsdig: Bank Owned Properties - They're Not for Everyone... - 06/11/10 11:44 PM
Bank Owned Properties - They're Not for Everyone...     Inventories of bank owned properties seem to ebb and flow in every market. The "better" properties often get snapped up by investors looking to maximize their ROI. This often leaves the "culls" setting, unoccupied for months on end.     It is human nature to want to get more than our money's worth. The same holds true for folks who put a contract on Bank owned properties. Many of these are typically "on sale" for 10's of thousands less than the comps for the neighborhood. Nary a thought is given as to the reason … (13 comments)

michaelsdig: It's a Matter of Perspective... - 06/10/10 10:28 AM
It's a matter of perspective...     One thing I can say about inspecting new construction, it's kinda like a box of Cracker Jacks. You know you are going to get a surprise. It is a matter of what and where. Such was the case with a new two year old "new construction" property that had been setting. Not only was I blessed to have a nervous Nelly as a first-time home buyer, but I had the crusty ding-bat listing agent present who pooh-poohed everything I said.        If I heard the phrase, "It was built to code...; or it was inspected … (10 comments)

michaelsdig: Concert in the Park ~ Brentwood, TN - 06/08/10 10:01 AM
Concert in the Park ~ Brentwood, TN...     Brentwood, TN kicked off its 2010 Concert in the Park series with the local home boys "kickin' a little" in the grassy knoll surrounding the Eddie Arnold Amphitheater last Sunday night... Hundreds of folks gathered to watch "Little Texas" debut this summer's line up of class acts. And "Kick a Little" they did.        These wonderfully talented musicians treated their fans to many of their hits: "What Might Have Been"; "God Bless Texas"; "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "My Love" to name a few. Brentwood and the Williamson County area of Middle Tennessee have … (10 comments)

michaelsdig: Inspection Photo of the Day ~ Ask Andy... - 06/07/10 11:39 PM
Inspection Photo of the Day ~ Ask Andy...     Andy, while working in the basement, my husband discovered these neat doohickeys. They were probably left by some tradesman. He thought that this would be just the thing to repair the sagging duct work. I told him that he needed to put the other doohickey on the other side. What do you think?      ~~ Dorie in Austin
Dorie, I think your husband stumbled on a novel idea, with recycling and all. And you are right! Putting the other doohickey on the other side would have worked better than the bent nail... … (20 comments)

michaelsdig: Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder... - 06/06/10 11:03 PM
Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder...     Instead of giving myself reasons why I can’t, I give myself reasons why I can.      ~~ Unknown      In our never ceasing quest for success, there are times when life's events don’t go the way we planned. There will be obstacles that block our path, hurdles to leap and hoops to jump through. We will face tough challenges. There will be times when we feel like everyone and everything in the whole world has teamed up against us. Don't give up. Don't quit. Hang in there. You never know, the success we … (29 comments)

michaelsdig: (not so) Speechless Sunday... - 06/06/10 12:22 AM
(not so) Speechless Sunday...     Long before ribbons of asphalt and subdivisions covered the landscape of this area, cotton was king. Driving the rural back-roads, brought back memories of the once verdant farmlands, that once graced the tranquil hills and valleys of Brentwood and Williamson County.      Although I can't turn back the hands of time, I remember those cool, misty, southern mornings as a barefoot kid. The peaceful sounds of birds singing added to the tranquility while I watched the golden rays of a new day peek over the horizon...

michaelsdig: Farfromthinkün... - 06/04/10 11:21 PM
Farfromthinkün...     We all need a little support. Some more than others. The type, where and the need will generally dictate the right method, means and material.      It is not unusual to see active knob and tube wiring in older properties. Kinda like sleeping dogs, it is best to leave this stuff alone. Period!!!        In today's farfrumthinkün department, some individuals take the meaning of support and being supportive to an all time (____.) <<fill in the blank>. Yup!!! You guessed it!!! They wanted to be supportive - to the duct work, water line, sewer line...

michaelsdig: Friday's Fotos - Ode to the Butterfly... - 06/04/10 12:22 AM
Friday's Fotos - Ode to the Butterfly...     Butterflies. Those beautifully colored flying flowers that grace and adorn our gardens every year. How I long for their return. Gazing upon their supple elegance is like watching poetry in motion.       Ah, only to be a butterfly. To be able to glide through the air on the wings of an angel. Wings more delicately colored than the rainbow. Wandering about. No worries, no cares. Sipping the nectar of the gods from outstretched arms. Living life as it was meant to be - eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die...

Inspection Photo of the Day ~ Ask Andy...
Andy, I finished reading your book, "Handy-Dandy Tips for Improving Your Pad". You have inspired me to get off my duff and start doing some of the things on my "Honey Do" list. I followed your advice. I measured, cut and it is still too short. I did this twice. Any suggestions? ~ Nutsy from Seattle

michaelsdig: Silly Sunday Afternoon Post... - 05/30/10 09:35 AM
Silly Sunday Afternoon Post...      Taking a break from toiling in the hot afternoon sun, gives me time to reflect on the fruits of my labors. I marvel as I watch those who labor tirelessly, to make my paltry efforts pale in comparison. I watch in awe how they so meticulously caress each blossom ensuring that new generations will be the offspring of their work. My job was really simple when I look at it, I tilled and planted. Nature does the real work...

(not so) Speechless Sunday...      Rush! Rush! Rush! Nowadays, it seems as if Americans are in a rush to get to where they think they need to be. Sadly, our gotta-have-it now mentality is leading far too many to an early grave.        Slow down a little, won't you? Life IS way too short. For Pete's sake, we are not in a speed reading contest. Take time to enjoy and smell the flowers. Once they are on your coffin, it's too late...

Farfromthinkün...
In today's farfromthinkün department comes this scratch your head and wonder picture. I will be the first to admit, I am not the brightest bulb in the sting. And, I have been known to do some crazy things from time-to-time but I really wonder what this tradesman, craftsman, okay idjet was thinking?         The overflow drain from the water heater drains onto the slab where there is a living space with expensive hardwood floors on the other side. Where will the water go and whatcha think will happen when the water heater springs a leak? I'll give ya … (11 comments)

Inspection Photo of the Day...      I admit. I like electronic gismoz. I'll admit that I have to have the latest and greatest electronic marvel that man can imagine. However; I ran across one that kinda took me aback. The oddly shaped device mounted next to the water closet even had a digital display.        Must be one of those new fangled gas leak detectors for the rich and not so famous. Whatchoo think? I ain't the foggiest...

michaelsdig: A Picture or a Photograph... - 05/29/10 12:20 AM
A Picture or a Photograph...      ...what is the difference? Or is there? Anyone who reads my blogs knows that photography is my passion. Given an interesting subject, I can easily get into my right mind and start wandering behind the pixels.        I marvel at an artist's abilities to put images on canvas. There is a special place in their mind where time and form intertwine. Form becomes everything and time just is.      Granted. A massive field of flowers is something that most folks would want to take a picture of. Only someone in their "right mind" would … (44 comments)

michaelsdig: Inspection Photo of the Day... - 05/07/10 11:21 PM
Inspection Photo of the Day...     As we all know, the bubble in some folks level can be a little off. While this statement can be taken several ways, I am referring to the little bubble that is off on a plumber's level.        The basic principle learned in Plumbing 101 is "that stuff" flows down hill. Then why is it that these newly installed sewage pipes in a recent rehab in the Nashville, TN real estate market run up hill? Could it be that the bubble in their level was a little off or does "that stuff" really happen?      The … (16 comments)

Inspection Photo of the Day...     Following instructions is important. When it comes to this department, some folks adopt the attitude: "P-f-f-ft! Instructions? I don't need no stinking instructions!!!"       Manufacturers spend a lot of time designing their products for safety. They go through great lengths to tell the end consumer the correct way to install their product. Some instructions are as simple as pouring water out of a boot with instructions on the heel...

Inspection Photo of the Day...     Planning ahead is always a good option. And, why not? One never knows what detours the road of life will take you down.       While inspecting a recent rehab in the Nashville, TN real estate market It doesn't look as if the plumbers and the framing crew planned too far ahead on the installation of the water heaters. Like how the heck are you going to remove them or install a new one when these go south?     Installation of water heaters in the attic in this real estate market in older properties is common to see. … (30 comments)
