michaels dig: What Are Friends For? - 01/24/11 10:39 AM
What Are Friends For?ActiveRain SuperStar and my friend, blogger extraordinaire, Craig Rutman, Was a tad down in the dumps after his beloved Jets lost to the Pittsburgh Squealers in a real squeaker last night. Nothing I could do could bolster his spirits (although he did consume a lot of them).

Being the friend that I am, we took a very quick trip to Lambeau Field today, where the great folks up there welcomed us with open arms. And, they too felt bad that Craig took the loss so hard. To cheer him up, they threw huge "Packer style" tail … (17 comments)

Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder...When life hands you a lemon, bust out the tequila and salt…      ~ Unknown Life can be challenging, and it certainly has its ups and downs. How you deal with life and being able to roll with the flow are important. Life is going to hand you a lemon. No doubts about it. When it does, you have two choices: You shake your fist at the "gods" and get emotionally all hot and bothered; or you can chill, learn from the experience and party down for you have just gotten another nugget of … (36 comments)

michaels dig: Never Answer The Same Question Twice - Would YOU Buy This House? - 01/21/11 11:04 PM
Never Answer The Same Question Twice - Would YOU Buy This House?Having been a licensed professional home inspector for over 10 years, I've been asked thousands of questions. The most frequent question I get asked by nervous first time home buyers or parents who are helping to fund the property for siblings is, "Would YOU buy this house?"Because, every word that rolls off the tongue of home inspectors is regarded as the "Gospel" accord to... and taking into consideration that this is an emotionally charged time; home inspectors need to be careful on how they answer this question. Should something go … (31 comments)

michaels dig: Making the Ends Fit the Needs... - 01/19/11 10:08 PM
Making the Ends Fit the Needs...It's not unusual for enterprising home owner's to voyage into the more creative sides of their minds to fulfill some need that isn't being met. Oh, let's say they need power run to the barbecue pit. They hitch the horses up to the chuck wagon, scurry off to one of the big box stores, load up all the supplies they'll need and start tinkering - nary a clue if it's right or wrong; it about making the ends fit the needs. T'other day, while inspecting a property in the Nashville, TN real estate market, I spotted … (33 comments)

michaels dig: Getting Back on the Wagon: It Ain't Easy... - 01/14/11 11:25 PM
Getting Back on the Wagon: It Ain't Easy...As we get older, our metabolism slows down by about 1% per year past the age of 25. Faced with "biggie sizes" at the fast food joint, sedentary life styles, and over indulgence of "adult beverages", is it any wonder that American's have a weight problem? Fighting the battle of the bulge, has become a way of life for many, myself included. Having joined Roger's "Take it off in the Rain" group, was an incentive / accountability group to help keep folks on track. But alas, I fell off the wagon over the holidays. … (34 comments)

michaels dig: The Code IS: "There Ain't No Code"... - 01/14/11 05:37 AM
The Code IS: "There Ain't No Code"...There are building jurisdictions throughout the country that adhere to the "Good 'Ol Boy" way of building. Generational incompetence handed down from father to son seem to the the norm. And the attitude? "If you want it, here it is! I'll sell it to someone else." There is something to be said about ignorance being bliss or is it? Manufacturers specifications always take precedence over municipal codes or good 'ol boy installation practices. I have yet to see where plumbers strapping has been an approved method for securing attic pull-downs, but then, these guys may … (14 comments)

michaels dig: Adding Color to Your Life... - 01/12/11 10:30 PM
Adding Color to Your Life...I have often been asked how do I get colored text in my comments and in my posts.  I wrote a blog on how to do this about this time last year. For the newbies who missed this or for those "old timers" who want to add a little spice to their lives, I went into my video archives and dug this out.I strongly urge you to keep your template and just modify it accordingly so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel every time you post something. I hope this helps.

michaels dig: (not so) Wordless Wednesday... - 01/11/11 10:48 PM
(not so) Wordless Wednesday...The real estate market for the Nashville Tennessee area is steadily increasing its pace. This week, the phones of been ringing and I have been pushing most of the jobs off until next week when it warms up a llittle and the snow melts. The only exception to the rule right now has been condos because I don't have to inspect the roof. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to inspect one of the units in the Icon,  one of the high-rise condominium communities located in the Gulch here in Nashville Tennessee.  Not only was I treated to unit … (37 comments)

The 7 Minute Post...
DragonDictate for Mac and NaturallySpeaking for PC are two speech-to-text applications that have been around for quite some time. Long been a techie, I tried out the earlier versions of NaturallySpeaking in an attempt to expedite my report writing and take the business to another level. Needless to say, I was rather disenfranchised with the product as it seemed to make more errors than anything else.I finally ditched the product after numerous hours of training and frustration. On a side note though, if you were looking for a good laugh, it was a pretty cheap investment and … (99 comments)

Slip Sliding Away...
This morning middle Tennesseans were given both a treat and a treatment. We woke up this morning to approximately 4 inches of snow which was really a site to behold for this area. Generally, we don't get as much snow as we have experienced but this year  looks to be the exception rather than the  rule. What the heck it looks as if the kids are going to get another snow day. Speaking of snow days, I'm taking advantage of this downtime to install Dragon Speaking on my Mac and I'm using it to dictate/type this post. … (25 comments)

Time to Call Fowl...Like something out of a bad "B" movie or Hitchcock's "The Birds", the yard has been inundated daily for the past week with hundreds of migratory birds of all sorts. Mind you, I like birds. They are certainly beneficial and serve a place in the grand scheme of things. And a few here and there are okay. But when one gets bombarded with thousands of them, and throw into the mix the mess they leave behind, it's time to cry fowl or is that foul...

Friday's Fotos ~ A Trip to the Photo Shop...After a hard day a work, I often like to take a stroll through the aisles of the local Photo Shop. While there, there is no telling what flights of fancy, lampoons or wild stuff will jump off the canvas. I say this, because before the invention of television, folks entertained themselves. They read, often to each other, learned/played instruments, painted - they increased their brain power by keeping it active. Today, folks want to be entertained. They sit like a bump in the Barca Lounger, mash buttons on the remote, and partake … (31 comments)

(not so) Wordless Wednesday...Alright already!!! So I'm a day behind and 3 dollars short. However, I have been busy making munee so I guess that puts me a Nickle 95 ahead.Cats. They can be really cool at times. When it comes to siesta time, they seem to find the most comfy places to hang. I've seen them dangling from a limb, wadded up in a box, curled in basin and, well, lounging in the loo...

michaels dig: Trashing the Home Inspector... - 01/04/11 10:14 PM
Trashing the home inspector... The purpose or intent of this post is not to rip real estate agents. There are some really good, honorable folks in this business who work in/for the best interest of their clients. On the other hand, there are those who, like a shark, go into a feeding frenzy when the scent of a commission check is in the water. The relationship between Realtors and home inspectors is often nebulous at best. Being an ancillary service provider, we are only as good as our last job. The discovery of  deficiencies in a home can kill a deal, … (72 comments)

Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder…The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!      ~ Edward Payson PowellA new year has begun. As we look backwards in deep, thoughtful contemplation, we write our resolutions or goals. Hopefully, this will be our chance to get some things right this time around and not pave another road with good intentions.
