Mission Valley condos, San Diego CA: Things to do - The San Diego Zoo

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and comment.Once you buy your Mission Valley condo, I would suggest a trip to the San Diego Zoo as soon as you can get there.

Annual passes are very reasonable, especially when you consider that you not only get in FREE to the San Diego Zoo, but also the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

When you go to the Zoo, I can highly recommend going to bed early the night before your scheduled trip so that you can get there at 9:00 in the morning, when the Zoo opens.

The advantage of getting there early are manifold:

  1. You'll get a prime parking spot
  2. No waiting in long lines
  3. You'll be able to immediately visit the exhibits you want to see
  4. You'll get got watch many of the animals being fed
  5. Since many animals are being fed, they are up and at 'em, eating, cleaning, and, uh, pooping, before they bed down for an afternoon siesta.

One of the great things that the San Diego Zoo does is run various specials for its members throughout the year. One of those specials is a very personal tour. The tour guide drives you around in your own special little cart with about ten people.

In some cases, you'll even get to feed the animals, as this little group was doing at the Galapagos tortoise exhibit:

The tortoises know that when a crowd of people arrive, they are going to get fed. Apparently, carrots are to the Galapagos tortoise what chocolate is to the human race -- LOL.

One of the women was wearing orangle sandles, and one of the alpha males immediately saw those two carrots and took after them. Fortunately, the Zookeeper was there to get things back under control.

One of the tortoises refuses to eat carrots when the crowds are there. He likes to eat in private. However, that might be because he likes to have his neck rubbed instead:

I believe his name is Chips, and he just stood there in that position from beginning to end. He wouldn't eat anything, but he let everyone rub his neck.

Hi Jim, those pictures of the tortoises are great!  Who would have thought that a neck rub would be so appreciated by one of these big guys?

Good Monday Morning Jim:   I love these tortoise!!!  Last time I saw them several years ago they were mating, the kids pointed it out to me!!!   Mating 101, I guess!!!   When I used to take my boys to the Zoo and WAP, we always got there early, and left early, thats why I had the annual passes.  If someone had a meltdown, which usually happened.  Sometimes I had up to 5 kids all by myslef so one of them always got out of sorts or tired and wanted to go home.

That is pretty cool, I thought they stopped letting the public feeding the animals a few years ago. I'm glad they are letting them do it again.

Hey, Andrea - Russel and I might host a day at the Zoo for the 2009 NAR convention which is right here in San Diego in November. So make plans to come! No orange, though! LOL

Hey, Ann - I suspect there are lots of animals that would like a good neck rub. Zoey the Cool Cat likes to have her little chinny chin chin rubbed.

Hey, Jane - I have seen them mating before, as well as some of the hooved animals. I can only see mommy and daddy discussing the birds and the bees during the family vacation to the Zoo - LOL.

Hey, Jim - Russel and I might do a behind the scenes tour for our first wedding anniversary in October. I'm not a big fan of petting wild animals, but Russel is, and the Zoo does provide antiseptic after the petting.

Hey, Xinh - Come to the 2009 NAR Convention right here in San Diego in November and you can make a side trip to the Zoo.

Hey, George - I don't know if they ever let people pet the animals or not, but perhaps in this economy they are looking at additional ways to bring in some money.

Hi Jim, amazing how even tortoises have individual personalities!  Chip seems to be quite the charmer!
