Finding good ideas gone wrong is nearly a daily experience for the home inspector
I often kid that I know enough about something to be dangerous. There are times while looking through a house that it seems that those who should know don't know what they should know with potentially dangerous results.

fire protection: A Stairway to Heaven? - 08/13/08 04:52 AM
Yes believe it or not that stairway could get you to heaven.  The underside of these stairs is not covered by wall board. The under side of a stairway must be covered as fire protection. If a fire were to start, the stairway acts as an easy pathway for the flames to reach the next floor. Covering the wooden stairs with sheet rock will slow down the advancing fire, buying the occupants a little extra time to get out safely.
