wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: Not Enough Static - 06/02/09 12:50 AM
Some homes have wells that provide the water to the home. When a home has a well the home inspector will often perform a well flow test. This is done to determine if there are problems with the well system.
The correct method for doing this type of testing is to use a water flow gauge. This method provides accurate and easily recordable data.
The first reading during the test is the "static" pressure. This is the water line pressure in the house. This pressure should be between 40 - 80 psi (pounds per square inch). Low pressure with a well … (12 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: The Meaning of the Ring - 05/28/09 03:38 AM
Rings are all around us and quite a few have some meaning. The most common and obvious is the wedding and for the ladies engagement rings. Then there's the mood ring (remember those), the decoder ring, the brass ring, Lord of the Rings and on...
Sometimes there's hidden meaning in a ring, but you have to know the code to hear what it has to say.
Take for example the rusty ring around the top of this water heater. Sure doesn't look all that mysterious. But it has a story to tell if you know how to read the ring.
What … (13 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: What I Don't Know Can Hurt You - 05/14/09 01:44 AM
You know the old saying; what you don't know can't hurt you. That logic is completely ludicrous. History is full of unknowns that have sickened or killed countless people because of ignorance. The use of lead and asbestos in buildings is a good example. Using these materials was done out of a lack of knowledge for the eventual consequences. Nothing bad occurred to anyone right away, it often took many years for an illness to manifest itself in an individual.
Let me take this in a slightly different direction. As a home inspector one of the most common added structures I … (18 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: A Pipe or Rod, What's the Difference? - 05/05/09 01:46 AM
The difference between these long cylindrical objects may appear to be a matter of semantics, but when it comes to electricity they are clearly defined.
A pipe is a tube, meaning it is hollow, used to transport liquid or gas. A rod would be solid and has many uses including an electrical ground.
Just to confuse things a pipe can be used for a main electric ground and they often were and still are today. Most everyone is familiar with the ground wire on the main water pipe from the street. But that can not be the only ground today. There … (12 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: You Might Get That Sinking Feeling - 04/28/09 06:36 AM
You ever get that feeling that something just isn't right? A nagging feeling perhaps misfortune is but a moment away. Surely everyone has experienced it at one time or another.
One place I'm sure many people have anxiety is on a ladder. Especially one set against the house or precariously perched on an un-level surface. The combination of height, those little rungs and a somewhat wobbly perch is enough to start heart palpitations in anyone.
Now a relatively steady, rugged and permanently installed ladder should be another thing all together. For instance your attic pull down stairs. Attic ladders are not … (19 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: Do You Love Your Children? - 03/31/09 01:42 AM
Well of course I do! That would be the answer anyone would expect, an indignant and some what offended response. But as a home inspector sometimes I truly wonder if some people really do love their kids. Maybe I am being a little harsh and judgmental, but I do at times marvel at some parents.
To be fair maybe they just aren't educated, (not school educated) but common sense should tell you....
The picture you see is of a gate, and I use that term very loosely, from the deck to the above ground swimming pool. There was at least one … (14 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: A Little Cut Here, Shift This Over There - 02/15/09 10:51 PM
The word structure for me conjures up images of a sturdy skeleton for something to be built upon. Just like our bones are the structure for our bodies. So it stands to reason when you start messin' with the bones bad things can happen.
Take for example a new and uniquely built home I recently inspected. New in this case was some what a misnomer. You see the "new" house was built on the foundation and some of the structure of an old house.
What the builder did was raze the older house leaving the original foundation, first floor framing and … (19 comments)

wallingford ct ashi certified home inspections: Watch Your Water - 02/01/09 09:56 PM
Forced air heating is found in many, many homes. An addition to these systems is often a humidifier for use during the dry winter months. Furnaces by their operation dry the air out further and some people find they need to add moisture back into the air in order to breathe comfortably.
Humidifiers integral with the heating system or portable models will do the job, but there can be consequences unbeknownst to the home owner.
Too much long term moisture in a house can cause some serious problems. The most notorious is of course mold growth. Other problems are wood decay … (16 comments)
