I don't know what it is with me and weird bird findings lately, but this is decidedly NOT a Thanksgiving bird!
Opening the furnace cover to look inside I saw what appeared to be a lot of piles of dirt!
This house, and unit, are only 10 years old.
But I still have a look anyway.
Honestly, I have never seen something like this.
Looking closer, there were not little piles of dirt inside the unit!
They were little birds!
But those birds had been there a while!  A long while.
Totally desiccated, I suspected they had been there since construction.  … (16 comments)

gas furnace: Shake, Rattle and Blow - 03/24/10 11:15 PM
One thing to check for in new construction is proper installations.  For a home inspector that can be daunting.  The building supervisor has been on site for 100 or 120 days.  The inspector only gets a couple of hours.
You would think everything would be installed properly!  After all, there are various subcontractors coming in, each a specialist in their field, and they are putting things together piece by piece.
Certainly one of my jobs is to test equipment.  I always cross my fingers that no serious damage will result - dishwashers not connected, sparking electrical, overflowing toilets or washing machines … (13 comments)

gas furnace: A Furnace Working As Intended - 11/19/09 11:57 AM
During a thermal infrared inspection today, among other things I was there to investigate, I thought this would be an interesting picture.
This is a thermal image of a high efficiency condensing gas furnace.  It is the one you have seen with PVC tubing exiting the unit.  They are terrific furnaces.  The one pictured here is 6 years old, which makes it the fourth generation.  This later generation has worked out all the kinks.  They work great.
Many gas furnaces, like my own, have flues which exit through the roof.  My furnace loses a lot of its heat through that flue.  … (13 comments)
