minnesota gardening: It is a Minnesota Fall Ritual. - 09/22/12 10:02 AM
Tonight is heading for the first frost of fall.  WE have been waiting for it.  My area the timing is right on for this first frost.
So what is the ritual???

The covering of the flowers and garden.
We know that we will get some nice days yet, and the flowers are just starting to bloom for a few varieties we have and now just is not the time to lose them.

A few garden things could use another week or so also.
So for us in the North Land, this is a normal ritual we do every year.   … (6 comments)

minnesota gardening: The beginning of the End is Near! - 08/18/12 09:00 AM
No the world isn't going to end, not as far as I know anyways.
I am talking about my garden.
It did very well this year and still is, but, you can see the change in the color of the leaves that indicate that it has seen it's better days.
The yellow beans are about done and the tomatoplants leaves are turning brown.
None of this is from lack of water.  Things turned cool last week and you could see the change.
Warmer weather is on it's way, but it won't change much.
It has been a great growing season and … (10 comments)

minnesota gardening: North Branch, Minnesota's hot dinning spot for today. - 08/07/12 01:45 AM
Every town has one.

A local spot to dine out.

In larger cities, it may be a well known chain.

It can also be a free standing one and only that has paid attention to the detail their customers have shared with them.

In a small town, it will be a Mom and Pop shop.

Today in North Branch, Minnesota...it is Bill's Garden Diner.

Sunflower Pollen is the Special for the day from the black Sunflower seed.   It is all you can eat and first come first served.
Some seating is still available … (6 comments)

minnesota gardening: For those that like a bit of tomato on your hambugers. - 07/23/12 12:56 PM
I Nutured and coxed this tomato for some time now.  I picked it yesterday at about the peak of it's ripeness.
The BBQ was hot and onto the grill went the burgers.
When all done, one burger and one slice of tomato on top!

I need to make the burgers a bit bigger and find some bigger buns.

minnesota gardening: Minnesota Gardening...Pushing the Envelope! - 05/06/12 11:00 AM
Safe Gardening for Minnesota in North Branch area is around the 20th of May.  The normal last day of frost.  But, I have seen frost as late as June 2nd.
But, I am one to start early.  I buy new seeds most every year and there are enough for at least 2 plantings in my garden, so I end up givng them away or throwing them away.

Radishes are hardy and getting them in early is better as they do better in the cool weather.

Beans on the other had are more delicate.  29 degrees or so and you … (8 comments)
