minnesota winter: Hey People...it is winter in Minnesota!!! - 01/26/14 05:49 AM
This morning after 4-5 inch snowfall, I was heading into town.
I came upon a car that had slide just off the should of the road.
I could see someone standing outside the car.
I pulled over to help.  Here was a young lady, dressed in a light jacket, skirt and high heels.
I told her I could get her out.  I also asked her where her boots were.
"I didn't think I would need them." She replied.
Well, generally no one thinks they will need any of the extra clothes for winter but it is always a good idea to have … (10 comments)

minnesota winter: So...just how cold is 30 below zero? - 01/25/14 02:46 AM
I have been asked this by people I know or have met from the south.
It is hard to explain, but one example is at -25 you can take a cup of boiling water and throw it into the cold air  and it will turn to snow.
So how cold is -30?
A farmer friend of mine told me that the morning when it was -30 that when he went to milk his cows all he got was...
Ice Cream!

minnesota winter: A Severe Fever has hit the Upper Central USA! - 01/25/14 12:50 AM
Yes, the fever has hit Minnesota and many of the surrounding states.
I won't say it is contagious, but it is spreading wildly.
It doesn't need physical contact to spread...just isolation.
It hits the shut ins that are older and hard to get around.
Low light causes the claustrophobic feelings.
It hits the young and the old alike and doesn't discriminate.
So, what is this fever?
CABIN FEVER!!!
It is predicted to last until the weather turns warm  and the sun stays longer everyday.

You can't vaccinate against Cabin Fever!

You just have to get out and enjoy the … (8 comments)

minnesota winter: Snow and cold isn't all bad. - 01/23/14 03:40 AM
One good thing is that the severe cold is killing off a lot of bugs.  It should be a pleasant year for us.
The cold keeps the active cold virusesand bacteria's a bit more in check.
And the photo's are great...

And because of the cold our population stays much lower...I don't feel crowded out.

minnesota winter: Winter is only as long as you make it... - 01/10/14 06:13 AM
I am already hearing that winter has been so long.
It is only the 10th of January. Of course the ones saying this are the ones sitting in the house doing nothing.
There are all kinds of winter activities to do.  This weekend is going to be nice...Get off your duff and do something.
Ther are also a lot of inside things to do...movies, museums, concerts, sport and home shows.
If you just sit and stare at the tube...it will be a long winter.
Family get together's are also a great one for this time of year, along with friends not … (7 comments)

minnesota winter: WAHOO!!!! The coldest night of the year ! - 12/10/13 09:18 AM
The Weather people are saying this will be the coldest night of the season.
WE have hit -20 already.  Now, I am betting on -22 with a wind bringing the windchill down to about -30 to -40.
So, why am I so happy?
I got this great new Winter coat, and it hasn't been cold enough to use it yet.
Tomorrow, I need to drive my small tractor, without a enclosure, about 10 miles for some work I need to do.
I figure the coat will get it's chance to prove itself.
Besides, if the coat works well, I will use … (10 comments)

minnesota winter: My snow piles are record high, but we didn't have record snowfall. - 03/17/13 06:56 AM
I have been plowing my drive and a dozen other for years.  I grew up on the farm where we plowed snow just so we could work.  So, I know that when you start plowing the first time, you push it back as far as you can.
I did that.   Now usually, we get a January thaw.  It will take the piles down a bit and I can pile on top of the first couple of snow falls.  Even February allows some melting and we can again pile on top.
But this year we had neither.  I am stacking the … (5 comments)

minnesota winter: Warm weather is not always great! - 02/27/13 06:31 AM
At this time of the year, many of us are ready for dry ground.
But the semi-warm weather isn't always so good.  The snow starts melting, (a good thing)  But, then the water starts to freeze and right away we have ice on side walks and drive ways.
In early march, we will see some colder days and more snow.
Ice on surfaces become hidden when the snow comes again.  Just be aware of the bad spots that you walk.  We are almost through the winter season. Now is not the time to get careless and break something.

minnesota winter: Some things even snowmen (Women) can't avoid. - 01/06/13 08:15 AM
My wife got a new snowman for Christmas.
One of her friends with a great sense of humor gave her a gift which many can relate to.  After she opened it she put this one in a very prominent place.
Humor us a wonderful thing.  Those who have it are much happier than most.  those that don't have it don't get what all the fuss is about.
Hope you enjoy this one.

minnesota winter: The Holiday's may be over but it is still Winter! - 01/05/13 05:17 AM
And winter means snowmen, and not just the outside kind.
I posted earlier that my wife has a bunch and I am finally getting to them.
So, here are just a few photo's of her 450+ snowmen...

This is about 1/2 of the snowmen that she displays.  There are many more on the Christmas trees and all over outside. Hope you enjoyed.

minnesota winter: The first lasting Minnesota snow for the season. - 12/09/12 10:07 AM

The snow looks really nice right in this picture.  8 inches on the ground, but that was early this morning.  At 8 pm, we have about 16 inches give or take a snow flake or two.
It has gone from pretty to pretty obnoxious.
I have been plowing snow all day and am not even close to being done as the snow continues to fall.
So, I will just keep the good image in my mind for tonight.

minnesota winter: Dehydration...Not just a human problem! - 12/06/12 08:55 AM
With the Flu season we hear "Drink a lot of Fluids!"
This is true and the same goes for just everyday living.  more issues are caused by dehydration than anything else.
But, it isn't just us humans that can suffer.  Our pets that are tied and do not have access to water are also at risk.  The colder it gets, the more fluids they need.  Water is needed to keep the bodies blood moving for warmth.
Lets take this one step farther...Our friendly critters of Mother Nature.  When the cold get's below freezing it is hard for the birds and animals … (14 comments)

minnesota winter: Minnesota ice is still Precarious - 01/06/12 11:16 AM
Yes the ice on our lakes is getting thicker, but warm spells like we are having does make the ice weaker than when we get a good hard freeze.
Every week I still hear people going through the ice.  You hear," well it was 15 inches thick over there, why is it only 4 inches here."
Safety should be your biggest concern.  Know the waters you are going on.   Make sure others know where you will be.
Once you fall in, it only takes a few minutes to succumb to hypothermia.

minnesota winter: The Snow Bird Migration. - 11/19/11 01:50 AM
Yup, up hear in the Northland, the Snow Bird Migration is in full swing.  WE have seen an exodus going on for the last month or so and will see it continue right on through the holidays.
So, what is a Snow Bird?
It is our aging population in the north that pack real heavy into motor homes and trailers and head south for the winter!
Heaven forbid that they see a site like below and still be on home turf.

The southern states will get a financial shot in the arm with this group.
While I understand … (10 comments)

minnesota winter: Even the 'Snow Birds' ask about the snow. - 02/27/11 11:40 AM
A snow bird in Minnesota terms is a person or persons that go south for the winter and then re-appear in the spring.  I have friends and clients that go south every year.
The question I get from them often is..."What does my home look like with snow?"
I usually tell them to come home and find out for themselves, Especially when they talk about fishing and golfing.
But, I usually do get around to showing a few pictures to themselves.
I wonder what it would be like to ask that question.   I don't see that happening to soon!
