I sensed it long before it became a reality. It was about about 25 years ago that I started not caring about the penny. Yes, I mentally gave up the support. The 25 years prior to that, I knew that it meant something. You see when I was growing up, a penny did some wonderful things A PENNY OPEN SOME PRETTY BIG DOORS You could go into a candy store (they call them liquor stores today) and not only purchase quite a bit with a penny, but have several good choices to do so. Whatever happened to the fun part of buying something? I am referring to a time in my growing up years where you could take a penny and go the store and have so many choices on what to spend it on. Let me remind you that there were even things that sold as 2 for a penny. Unbelievable, but true. My grandfather came to this country from Syria and right away was amazed. He brought with him all his beliefs and quickly realized some of those can stay and some have to go. You are in America now. Mutli-millions of dollars worth of candy will be bought and then given away. For the candy companies, that is exactly what they want to have happen. How that campaign got started remains a mystery to me. Whatever the campaign was, it is here, successful, and now and operates on automatic. People buy lots of candy to just give it away HALLOWEEN MEANS FREE CANDY Don't get me wrong. When I was young, innocent and growing up in New York, you go anywhere in your neighborhood and everyone knows everybody. If you go to the local candy store, you get to order cigarettes, ice cream or medicines by saying my mom told me to come here and then you ask for whatever and.... you would get it. A mothers word in Brooklyn, New York is the supreme court. The system worked and could not be abused because the communication between everyone was superior and constant. It was sacred.
