email scams: A new scam? Have you gotten this one? - 08/21/18 02:48 PM
Lately I've been shocked by the people setting up Go Fund Me accounts just because they want the money. I've been even more shocked by the amount of money they've amassed.
This morning's email brought a new twist. It was a message with the subject line: "Meet (name)." The message it contained was:

email scams: The three-step scam - 05/15/17 08:42 AM
Here's an interesting one that has come my way over the past week or so...
First I got an email from "Alan Liu | Service & Operations Manager,China Registry (Head Office)" telling me that a company was about to register the domains copybymarte.com.ca; copybymarte.net.ca; etc. They asked if I had any connection with that company.
I wrote back and said no, I did not.
I felt a little concerned about it, but what is there to do? I can't purchase "copybymarte" with every extension that exists today. Well, I suppose I could, but doubt that it would be a wise use of funds.
Next I got a … (10 comments)

email scams: Caution: Is this a new scam? - 10/07/16 08:48 AM
A few minutes ago I got a notice to click on a link to get my tracking number for a purchase from Amazon being sent via FedEx. There was no mention of a product or an order number.
The subject line said "Amazon order invoice" and the sender was "shipping @ FedexDeliveryID938Center.com"
I didn't recall having placed an order recently, but always save emails verifying orders, so I went to look. (You know how it is when you get old - you forget things.)
Nope, no order.
Is this yet another scam we need to warn our more easily misled friends and clients to watch out for?

email scams: A new email scam... - 11/19/13 08:59 AM
Here's a good one - just arrived in my in-box. It's almost funny, considering how many times I've mentioned to my AR friends that I am NO techie!
Of course, Marte Cliff Copywriting has no telecom expense management & Inventory systems... So the first paragraph is a bald faced lie.
Do you think anyone would be so absent minded as to think that they HAD worked with someone in a previous job? Or in this case, had possibly hired someone and forgotten them?
It would be fun to know what kind of letters this turkey gets in response to this letter...

email scams: How can this happen? - 09/12/13 12:53 PM
Last night I came across a video clip of old music from the late 50's - wonderful music, and while I didn't think my son would enjoy the music clips as much as I did, I thought he'd be interested in seeing the cars - and the way people dressed back then. So - I emailed him the link.
Before long I got a message from lashback.com saying that my message had been blocked. Upon following the link I learned that my IP address was blocked for sending spam or for failing to include an unsubscribe link.
Huh? I don't put … (10 comments)

email scams: Do they seriously think we're going to fall for this? - 11/17/12 04:45 AM
Lately I've been writing a lot about how misspelled words and poor grammar can ruin your marketing message. In some instances, it can also put up a big red flag that says "Bogus!!"
Everyone who uses Pay Pal knows that any message from them will include your name, but even if you didn't know that, this message would be a dead give-away that the sender was NOT Pay Pal...
A few minutes ago I got an email with the subject line: "Please update your Pay Pay account informations"
The email itself began:
Please update your PayPal account informations Hello

email scams: Scam alert - Did you get this today too? - 08/09/12 06:55 AM
Scammers really should check their lists before they send their mail.
If they're sending it to people who can't possibly have a real estate listing, it's a lie. That means there HAS to be some ulterior motive for sending it.
That makes it scary to me, and my bet is that hundreds of real estate agents got this same message. If I was still an agent, I just might have fallen for it.
Here's what it said:

Your real estate listing was featured in today's News Digest International (www.newsdigest.co).

We look forward to hearing from you again … (64 comments)

email scams: More Phishing Scams - 07/12/12 02:40 AM
Are they getting thicker - or are the scammers simply getting bolder?
Last week I received a notice that UPS was going to deliver a package - and telling me to click to see when to expect it. I almost bit on that one, because a few weeks ago I placed an order with "Cooking and Canning Company" and have had no communication or indication that they intend to send the merchandise since receiving the order confirmation. (Long story - I entered a dispute with Pay Pal over it yesterday.)
The big tip-off to that one was that the … (10 comments)

email scams: I don't know if it was dangerous or not, but... - 11/07/10 09:42 AM
Better safe than sorry!
Today I got an email from one of my copywriting clients - and it looked suspicious. So before I clicked the link I wrote to ask her if she'd sent it.
And no, she had not.
This email had no subject line and the entire message consisted of a link.
It showed that "she" had sent this link to about 8 of us... but I don't know if they were other people from her address book or not.
Apparently, we aren't the only ones who got the message. When she wrote back to tell me not … (10 comments)
