selfpromotion: What Makes YOU Special to Clients? - 02/08/19 04:04 PM
Often when I speak with real estate agents prior to writing their real estate bios I learn that they really don’t know what makes them stand out from their competitors.
Those agents don’t realize that the dozens of little things that go into the quality of service they give are what makes them special.
The nice thing about that is that they believe the things they do are “normal” and expected. Some even tell me that there is nothing different - they do the same job everyone else does.
As professionals who work with other agents every day, and who hear the … (13 comments)

selfpromotion: 31 Days of December Challenge - Day 5 a Bit more Productive! - 12/05/10 11:56 AM
A cold and quiet Sunday is a good time to get a few things accomplished - and I did!
I finally got my "free Letters" page written - and in fact did two of them. One for "Twittering" with, and one for people who have already purchased some of my pre-written real estate letters.
I already started tweeting and put a link on Facebook. The next step is to write to all those folks who have purchased letters.
Meanwhile, for anyone who has thought about purchasing one of my real estate letter sets but is hesitating because you don't know what … (4 comments)

selfpromotion: 31 Days of December Challenge - Pushing myself on Day 4 - 12/04/10 11:53 AM
Because I was away most of yesterday, today was a catch-up day. I had some writing to do for a client and of course that needed to be at the top of the list. It took a little while, because we had to discuss plans for a new website - whether to do it or try to work with the ones he has.
And... for some reason I woke up with a headache that didn't want to go away. Taking a nap kept feeling like the "right thing to do" although I didn't give in.
But... this challenge kept bouncing around … (4 comments)

selfpromotion: Why Use a Photo on Your Business Card? - 11/29/09 06:35 AM
Last week I got into a small "discussion" with someone on LinkedIn about using photos on business cards.
He said that since his doctor, attorney, accountant, and insurance man didn't use them, he saw no reason why he should have to do so.
And of course he's right. He doesn't HAVE to. There's no rule. But in a business like real estate, it's still a smart thing to do.
We need to face the facts of human nature. And one of those facts is that we forget more than we remember. Some of us are especially good at forgetting names, especially … (16 comments)

selfpromotion: Today's Real Estate Market is Just a Repeat Performance of the 80's - 03/26/09 07:58 PM
The real estate market has always had ups and downs, so while the current crisis is unpleasant, and it certainly called a screeching halt to what looked like a "feeding frenzy" in many markets, it isn't anything new.
If you were around in the 80's you'll remember that interest rates climbed well into the double digits. When I first got into the business I was trying to help people sell homes that carried mortgages with rates as high as 18%.
And getting financing was tough, too. Conventional loans called for 20% down. FHA was at 5% down, but few of the … (8 comments)

selfpromotion: Make Appointments with Yourself for Marketing - 04/26/08 08:21 PM

Marketing - it's the job that many real estate agents love to put off until later, and the one that absolutely should never be ignored. If you don't do it regularly, you could wake up one morning and realize that after today's closing, you don't have anything else going on.
I don't know why so many people dislike writing - I personally love it and thought that marketing was the most "fun" part of being a Realtor. That's probably why after 19 years of dealing with buyers and sellers I decided to quit and focus all my energies on … (3 comments)

selfpromotion: How to Win Customers and Make Sales Through Brilliant Conversation - 02/14/08 04:28 PM

Brilliant conversationalists are much sought after as guests at parties, as best friends, and as professionals to turn to when in need of assistance. Their clients and friends not only appreciate them but send them referral business.
How do they do it? Very easily. I promise you can learn the technique in the next 5 minutes. Training yourself to use it may take a little practice, however.
You may be thinking "I could never become brilliant at conversation, I'm way too shy."
Yes you can. In fact, your chances are much better than those of your more outgoing friends, because you … (15 comments)

selfpromotion: Adjust your attitude before you ask for referrals - 02/02/08 07:21 PM
Referrals are the lifeblood of many real estate practices, and yet most Realtors are afraid to come right out and ask for them.
Why? Because it feels like begging. It feels like you're saying "I can't get enough business on my own, so please send someone to me."
So what happens? Instead of speaking up and asking your clients and customers for referrals, you send out more farming letters and postcards. Maybe you even send a letter to past clients and include a throw-away line such as "If you know anyone else who needs a Realtor, please give them my name." You kind … (0 comments)

selfpromotion: What real estate consumers want to hear from you - 01/11/08 05:44 PM
For months I've been harping at my ezine readers about getting away from the "I'm here, hire me" kind of ads and to start stressing the benefits of your service. I've said to stop thinking about what you can't promise a seller and think about what you can promise.
When I started in real estate no one really promoted individual agents - or even agencies. The entire focus was on getting those listings into the newspaper - and doing so in the fewest possible words because each word cost money. The company paid for the ads, and our broker had no … (7 comments)
